Archbishop Hannan may not have finished at the top of a very competitive District 7-2A, but the Hawks of Coach Pat Lambert are the district’s lone survivors in the Select Division III playoffs.
While district champion Northlake Christian was eliminated by Catholic of New Iberia, 60-26, and runner-up St. Thomas Aquinas fell to No. 1 seed, Episcopal, 28-21, Hannan took advantage of its No. 4 playoff seed by handing host Pope John Paul II a 42-14 defeat.
In their last meeting as district opponents, Hannan barely got past the Jaguars, 22-20, but in a rematch on a foggy, misty Nov. 22, they had little trouble with its host.
Because Hannan is considered a Select school, it will not have to play the top ranked teams among the non-select schools – No. 1 Many and No. 2 Winnfield.
Instead, the Hawks will host Episcopal on Nov. 29, the top seed among selects, but ranked No. 4 overall.
Catholic League action
St. Augustine, the No. 1 seed in Select Division I, will have a return engagement with No. 5 Archbishop Rummel on Nov. 30 at Joe Yenni Stadium.
The Purple Knights, who defeated Rummel, 35-21, on Oct. 19, advanced to the semifinals by defeating Jesuit, 54-28. Rummel advanced by virtue of a 17-14 win over Scotlandville.
Holy Cross also earned a spot in the semis via a 27-13 win at Catholic High. The Tigers will face No. 2 Byrd at Tad Gormley on Nov. 29.
