Former Archbishop Alfred Hughes celebrated Mass April 8 on Divine Mercy Sunday at St. Joseph Church in New Orleans, saying that when Thomas doubted the resurrection of Jesus because he was not with the other apostles during his appearance before them, he “struggled believing that Jesus was also offering the gift of Divine Mercy – God’s redemptive love for us.” Archbishop Hughes urged Catholics to recognize God’s mercy toward them and share that mercy with others in a polarized world.
A large image of the Divine Mercy with St. Faustina’s inscription – “Jesus, I Trust in You” – is carried into the Divine Mercy Sunday Mass.
Archbishop Hughes said the early Christians lived in a community where everything was shared and “there was no needy person among them.” He added: “If God has shown his love in his offer of mercy, so must our love for one another be extended in mercy toward one another.”
