Father Paul Scalia, son of the late United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and vicar for clergy for the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, delivered the homily at the annual Red Mass on Oct. 1 at St. Louis Cathedral, attended by members of the legal profession. “A child knows the importance of rules – of laws – simply because no game is possible without them,” he said. G.K. Chesterton wrote about children playing on a grass field in the middle of the ocean. “So long as there’s a wall around the cliff’s edge, they can play themselves into every frantic game and make the place the noisiest of nurseries,” Chesterton wrote. “But should those walls be knocked down – should there be no rules, no laws – the children huddle in the center of the island for fear of the precipice.” Father Scalia said “laws mark out the space in which the children of men freely and joyfully live their lives and build their lives together.”
