A funeral Mass will be celebrated Jan. 10 at 12:30 p.m. at Loyola University New Orleans for Jesuit Father George F. Lundy, the former director of the Institute of Human Relations and former academic vice president of Loyola University.
Father Lundy died Dec. 20 at the age of 64. He had served for 45 years a Jesuit and for 33 years as a priest. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Ignatius Chapel (first floor, Bobet Hall). Father Lundy will be buried at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, La.
A native of Chicago, Father Lundy entered the Jesuits in 1966 at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, La. He was ordained a priest at St. Ignatius Church in Chicago on June 3, 1978.
Father Lundy served at Loyola University New Orleans from 1980-86 as director of the Institute of Human Relations and from 1986-92 as academic vice president.
He then returned to the University of Chicago where he earned his doctorate in Education. In 2004 he became Catholic campus minister at Southern University and associate pastor at Immaculate Conception Church in Baton Rouge, where he was superior of the community from 2006-11. He also was assistant for higher education on the provincial’s staff from 2004-09.
Father Lundy wrote extensively on education, race relations, the labor movement, homelessness and the death penalty. Several articles were published in the Blueprint for Social Justice. His final ministry was as director of the Moratorium Campaign at Loyola University New Orleans.
Father Lundy is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Lundy, and three sisters, Mrs. Noreen Osterlein, Ms. Barbara Lundy and Mrs. Mary Semela.
