Fr. Anthony Serio, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, passed away July 26, in New York. He was 88.
Father Anthony Serio was born May 2, 1930, in East Harlem, New York. He was one of 14 children. He attended James Monroe High school in the Bronx. After graduating, he entered the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
After his military career, he worked at various jobs for a decade and also attended St. Jerome’s College in Canada where he studied theology after which he decided to follow his vocation to become a priest.
He completed his studies in Rome at Brazilian College, North American college and Gregorian college and was ordained a priest Dec. 21, 1967, in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He served at St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Metairie and Our Lady Star of the Sea in New Orleans and was pastor of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Westwego until he retired in 2007.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 1 at St. Claire of Assisi Church in Bronx, New York.
He is survived by his three sisters Anna Serio, Flora Amato, from the Bronx and Marie Brescia from Florida. Also numerous nieces and nephews.
