Fournette in good company

When the Jacksonville Jaguars selected LSU running back Leonard Fournette as fourth-highest pick of the first round on April 27, they made the former St. Augustine great and 2013 “Mister Football” the sixth alumnus of the New Orleans Catholic League to become a first-round draftee in a pro sport.
 
Fournette is the highest-drafted football player produced by the New Orleans Catholic school system, but he’s not at the top of the overall, all-sports list.
 
That honor is held by Jesuit’s Will Clark, who was the No. 2 overall pick of the San Francisco Giants in the 1985 Major League baseball draft following his All-American senior season at Mississippi State.
 
Fournette shares second place on the elite list with Brother Martin and University of Kentucky basketball All-American, 6-10 center Rick Robey, taken fourth by the Pacers in the 1978 NBA draft.

The Catholic League has produced three other first-round selections.
 
Kerry Kittles of St. Augustine and Villanova became the eighth pick of the 1996 NBA draft when the New Jersey (now Brooklyn) Nets chose the 6-5 guard.
 
At pick No. 9, the Charlotte Hornets drafted another Brother Martin alum, D.J. Augustin, as their No. 1 choice in the 2008 NBA draft following his sophomore season at the University of Texas.
 
And the Kansas City Royals made ex-De La Salle and Tulane standout Frank Wills the No. 16 overall pick in the 1980 baseball draft.
