Two Sisters of Mount Carmel will be honored in celebration of the anniversaries of their religious professions at a Mass and reception at St. Leo Church in Lafayette on Nov. 2.
Honored will be Sisters of Mount Carmel Ann Carmel Segura (80th) and Catherine Riggs (50th).
Three Sisters of Mount Carmel also were honored this year and celebrated in their local place of ministry: Sisters Laura Melancon, (60th) in Lafayette; and Bernadine Juarez and Lourdes Calleja, (50th), both in the Philippines.
Sister Ann Carmel, 100, professed first vows in 1933. She holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of Notre Dame. She taught biology, vocal music, English, social studies and art in Mount Carmel schools in Thibodaux, Lafayette, Abbeville and New Iberia. She also served as directress of the postulants and novices from 1962-67. She received many awards at juried art shows for her paintings. Sister Ann Carmel is retired and living at St. Leo-Seton Convent in Lafayette.
Sister Catherine, a native New Iberia, professed first vows in 1963. She earned a master’s of education in counseling from LSU. She was a guidance counselor at Mount Carmel Academy, New Orleans. Since 2002 she has served as director of pastoral care at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center, New Orleans.
