With the help of alumni and other donors, the St. Augustine High School Foundation purchased a one-block property at 2525 St. Bernard Avenue to develop a $2 million practice facility for the use of the school’s football team, band and other school groups. Local businessman John Georges, publisher of the New Orleans Advocate and a member of the school’s board of directors, pushed the project, along with alumnus Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines, Dr. Dwight McKenna, and Frank and Paulette Stewart.
Interested observers camp out by the fence to oversee the team’s practice. The field is on the site of the old Haspels building near Broad and St. Bernard.
