St. Mary’s Dominican High School students Brogan Hausknecht, Madeline Puente, Jailyn Heisser, Stephanie Mayer, Lauren Nguyen, Morgan Forshag and Claire Dinwiddie participated in the Feb. 17 National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Stars Day of Service Junior Journalism Program.
They were among 12 local students selected to serve as credentialed media for the NBA Day of Service at William Hart Elementary School in Gretna where NBA players and coaches joined 500 volunteers to build a playground in partnership with KaBOOM! In 2008, the NBA started Day of Service in New Orleans was started in response to Hurricane Katrina.
The students were assigned story ideas, photo assignments and conducted interviews with NBA players and Commissioner Adam Silver. Stories and photos were published on JRNOLA –http://jrnola.com/category/nbacares/.
“This program gave our students real world experience as reporters. In that pressured environment, they wrote wonderful news stories. I am so proud of them,” said Kristin Thomas, English teacher and STAR newspaper adviser at St. Mary’s Dominican where these students are on staff.
