On Sept. 6, the senior class at St. Mary’s Dominican High School celebrated Ring Day and received our senior rings at a special Mass in front of family and friends. Then, following in the footsteps of generations of women who came before us, we ran through the halls to greet our fellow underclassmen.
During the ceremony, I listened to the history of the DHS ring and the students who now will wear it. As I listened to the class coordinators from eighth grade to senior year speak about our class unity and the memories we’ve shared here, I began to tear up. Finally, as my principal Mrs. Carolyn Favre presented me with my senior ring, I couldn’t help but feel honored to carry on the tradition of this ring. Over the years the style has slightly changed, though the meaning remains.
Ready, set, go!
After Mass ended, my friends and I were ready for the moment we had been waiting for since we came to Dominican. It was time to run through the halls just as so many alumnae have done since Dominican moved to this location in 1963.
I kicked off my heels and put on my cowboy boots. I held hands with my friends cheering with excitement as the faculty and students turned our rings for good luck.
After receiving my Dominican ring, I truly felt like a senior with the responsibility of leading the student body. Now, it is my duty to set an example like past DHS seniors by pursuing truth in all aspects of my life and seeking peace through having a relationship with Christ.
It was empowering to know that this ring was a symbol of all my achievements and my Dominican heritage. This ring, like the ones thousands of women have worn before me, symbolizes my commitment to Veritas (truth), service, and academic excellence.
On Ring Day, anticipation grew as the seniors gathered, waiting to process into the gym for the ceremony. As I looked upon the many faces of family and friends, I couldn’t help but be thankful for the opportunities God has blessed me with in order to be at Dominican.
Thankful for many gifts
I can’t help but give thanks to God for allowing me to meet my goals and surpass all expectations I had set for myself during my years here at Dominican. I would not be the empowered and intelligent young woman I am today without Dominican High School instilling in me values and traditions and forming my relationship with God.
