Dominican Father Jean-Jacques Perennes, director of the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO) in Cairo, Egypt, since 2011, will give three public lectures on the state of Christian and Islamic relations in the Middle East March 24 and 26.
The French Dominican is an expert in economics, interfaith dialogue and the history of the Dominican order in the Islamic world.
He will speak at St. Dominic Church, 775 Harrison Ave., New Orleans, March 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; at Myra Clare Rogers Memorial Chapel at Tulane University, 1229 Broadway St., New Orleans, March 26 from 5 to 6 p.m.; and at St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Road, Metairie, March 26, 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Also, Father Perennes will speak at all Masses at St. Dominic March 22-23.
“I will try to explain the situation in the Middle East, the political revolutions, the context and the challenge of living together as Christians and Muslims, and what we can do to promote a better mutual understanding,” Father Perennes said.
The recent political turmoil in Egypt has been a challenge, but Father Perennes said sometimes those in the U.S. paint “a picture that is a bit too dark.”
“Moving from a dictatorship to democracy takes time,” he said. “People have the dream that two or three years will be enough, which is not the case.
“For me, there are some quite positive things going on, but it takes time and patience.”
