Deacon Paul Mumme, who was ordained as a permanent deacon in 1991, died June 25 at the age of 80.
Deacon Mumme, who is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Elizabeth Howley Mumme, served for many years at St. Genevieve Parish in Slidell.
A funeral Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Gregory Aymond June 29 at St. Genevieve Church. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Deacon Mumme worked as superintendent of the central yard for the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board for 37 years. He was the first permanent deacon at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in New Orleans East.
He was a graduate of John McDonogh High School and Louisiana State University.
Deacon Mumme also is survived by nine children – Paul D. Mumme Jr. (Licia), Mary Beth McManus (Drew), Mark C. Mumme (Lesley), Theresa A. Thurman (Wally), Michael G. Mumme (Kathleen), Matthew D. Mumme Sr. (Donna), Patrick M. Mumme (Julie), Kathleen M. Dudenhefer (Jason) and Richard T. Mumme (Misty). He had 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
