Deacon William (Billy) A. Glennon Jr., who served as a permanent deacon at St. Pius X Church in New Orleans, died April 17 in New Orleans. He was 83 and had served as a permanent deacon since 1996.
Deacon Glennon graduated from Jesuit High School and was a member of the Blue Jays’ 1946 world championship baseball team. He also was a catcher on Loyola University’s baseball team.
Deacon Glennon earned bachelor’s and law degrees from Loyola and served in the Navy. After practicing law for more than 50 years, he retired from the New Orleans City Attorney’s office. Deacon Glennon entered diaconate formation. After his ordination, he taught RCIA and served as the chaplain for Kindred Hospital in New Orleans.
He also was a knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and a member of the St. Thomas More Law Society.
Deacon Glennon is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan West Glennon; his children William A. Glennon III (Karen), Michael P. Glennon (Denise), Timothy J. Glennon (Lisa) and Kathleen M. Glennon; and his stepchildren, Kelly Kimbell Commander (Derek) and Katy Kimbell Sinor (Howard).
He also is survived by nine grandchildren and by his brother Tommy.
Deacon Glennon’s funeral Mass was celebrated April 21 at St. Pius X Church.
Interment followed at St. Patrick No. 3 Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Grace House, a New Orleans residential treatment facility for women, are appreciated.
