On Oct. 14, adults and students from De La Salle, the Academy of the Sacred Heart and Lusher high schools in New Orleans helped paint a house located on Frenchman Street in New Orleans. The homeowner is an elderly woman who has lived there since the 1960s. The project, Rebuilding Together (formerly called Christmas in October), was sponsored by the Preservation Resource Center (PRC) in New Orleans. The PRC finds elderly or disabled homeowners and matches them with volunteers from the community. These students spent their Saturday making a difference in New Orleans community by scraping off paint and cleaning the house in preparation for future painting, said Michael Toso, a graduate of De La Salle and Preservation Resource Center volunteer who coordinated the schools. The 45 volunteers completed the task from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., he said. “The students really make a difference in our community,” Toso said about the effort, because they not only helped an elderly woman but improved a house in the neighborhood that might encourage others to do the same.
