Led by Most Valuable Player award recipient Devonte Allen (24), St. Paul’s won its second Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Classic championship on Dec. 2 by virtue of a 46-44 victory over defending CYO champion De La Salle.
Allen became the fourth player to be awarded MVP honors multiple times. He won the award in 2015 as a sophomore. He joins Bobby Delpit of St. Aloysius (1950-51), Brandon Spann of Jesuit (1997-98), and Craig Victor of St. Augustine (2010-11).
Allen scored 23 points in the championship game played at Jesuit. He was joined on the all-tournament team by his St. Paul’s teammate Parker Edwards; Abiram Frye and Jalen Henry of De La Salle; Glenn Grover Jr. of Hahnville; and Kolby Warren of Slidell. Edwards scored 13 points in the title game and Frye 13.
St. Paul’s defeated St. Stanislaus, 54-46; Fontainebleau, 53-39; and Slidell, 64-54, in the semifinal round game. De La Salle earned a trip to the championship game by defeating Archbishop Shaw, 74-44; Grace King, 69-64; and Hahnville, 64-48.
In consolation games, Jesuit defeated Fontainebleau, 61-29; Archbishop Rummel beat St. Martin’s, 60-35; East St. John topped King, 69-64; Brother Martin edged Holy Cross, 67-66; and John Curtis won over Archbishop Shaw, 60-52.
