Defending champion Newman will face De La Salle in the opening game of the annual Catholic Youth Organization invitational basketball tournament at Brother Martin’s Bob Conlin Gymnasium on Dec. 4.
The CYO released its tournament bracket on Oct. 14 for the four-day event whose championship game will take place on Dec. 7.
Newman will debut under new head coach Jimmy Tillette, a former St. Aloysius standout, who coached at Jesuit as an assistant and at De La Salle as head coach before beginning a long career as head coach of Samford University.
The Greenies’ opponent, De La Salle, returns to the tournament after a brief hiatus. The two will meet at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4.
That game will be followed by Archbishop Shaw vs. host Brother Martin at 7:30 p.m.
Three other sites will host first- and second-round games.
Tournament favorite East Jefferson will open with St. Thomas Aquinas in a 6 p.m. game at Jesuit, followed by Lusher Charter vs. the host Blue Jays at 7:30 p.m.
The doubleheader at Holy Cross matches St. Augustine and East St. John at 6 p.m., followed by Holy Cross vs. Country Day.
For the second year, Archbishop Hannan will be the fourth site. At 6 p.m., Archbishop Rummel will face Hahnville, and the host Hannan Hawks will play northshore neighbor St. Paul’s.
The semifinal round will be held at Jesuit at 6 and 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, and the championship game will take place at Brother Martin on Dec. 7.
Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
