Eric Coston, left, of St. Paul’s and Jesuit’s Jandon Briscoe won gold medals at the LHSAA Indoor State Track and Field Meet, held at LSU’s Maddox Fieldhouse on Feb. 18. Coston won the 1,600-meter run for the fourth consecutive year in the time of 4:21.63, and defending outdoor champion Briscoe ran a winning time of 49.67 in the 400-meter dash.
A pair of reigning state track champions didn’t wait for the outdoor season to begin to add to their gold medal count.
Eric Coston, the four-time Class 5A champion distance runner, won his fourth gold medal in the LHSAA State Indoor Championship Meet on Feb. 18 by winning the 1,600-meter run in 4:21.63.
Jesuit’s Jandon Briscoe, the 2016 champion in the 400-meter dash, raced home first in that event in a time of 49.67 seconds.
Briscoe edged Catholic League rival Jermie Walker of Archbishop Rummel, whose time of 50.21 gave him second place.
Briscoe and Coston also picked up silver medals for the day.
Briscoe (7.04) placed second in the 60-meter dash to Haughton’s Josh Lister (6.84).
Coston ran a 1:56.10 in the 800-meter run, which was won by Pineville’s Cameron Farris in 1:55.59.
Making his presence known for the upcoming outdoor season, Brother Martin’s Hunter Appleton finished ahead of Parkway’s Cole Billiot and his Brother Martin teammate Hayden Courrege to win the 3,200-meter run in 9:46.37.
St. Paul’s 3,200-meter relay team stopped the clock in a winning time of 8:16.70. Brother Martin was second in 8:18.74 in that event.
St. Paul’s 32 points netted a third-place finish in team competition behind medalist Catholic of Baton Rouge and John Curtis. Jesuit placed fifth with 26 points and Brother Martin, 24 points, was seventh.
Mary Nusloch’s win in the 80-meter run and second place finish in the 3,200 led the Academy of the Sacred Heart to a fifth-place finish among Division II girls’ teams.
Nusloch, the defending silver medalist in the outdoor 3,200, completed the 800 in 2:23.76.
Kalee Jo Banks of Ursuline Academy placed third in the Division I pole vault with a height of 10 feet, 7 inches.
