Not only did first-year head coach Wayne Stein inherit a football team from his hall of fame uncle Frank Monica, he also inherited a hurricane that set his program at St. Charles Catholic School back on its heels.
But like the champions that they are, the Comets rallied.
Stein and his assistants learned purpose from his uncle and got his team through the setbacks. His reward was the Comets completing a 11-0 season in which they turned tragedy into triumph by winning the Division III championship via a 32-27 victory over Lafayette Christian.
For his endeavors, Stein earned the Clarion Herald Elite Football Team Coach of the Year honor.
The Most Valuable Player on offense is Jesuit’s Jack Larriviere, whose rushing and passing engineered a 10-1 season and the Division I runner-up trophy for his team.
Larriviere gained his honor by rushing for 805 yards on 177 carries with 14 touchdowns as the Blue Jays’ leading ground gainer. His passing was also impressive, having completed 80 of 120 attempts, 20 of which went for scores.
Austin Roberts, a linebacker/defensive back for Brother Martin, was all over the field.
In 11 games, he accounted for 92 tackles, 16 for losses; had six sacks, three quarterback hits and two pressures. The senior also recovered three fumbles, intercepted a pass and added nine tackles on special teams.
