The pastors and parishioners of St. Dominic and St. Pius X gathered in St. Dominic’s school yard Oct. 14 to mark the 100th year of a Catholic presence in the Lakeview area. The first Mass, celebrated on May 12, 1912, in a West End dance hall, was led by Father Thomas Lorente, a Spanish-born Dominican priest brought to the city by Archbishop Placide Louis Chapelle. The area’s first formal place of worship – a small wooden chapel at 209 Chapelle St. – was dedicated in October of that year. Since then the area has become home to two vibrant parishes: St. Dominic and St. Pius X, established in 1924 and 1953, respectively. “We come here together today to remember our mothers and fathers of old,” said Archbishop Gregory Aymond, homilist and principal celebrant of the centennial Mass. “We stand on their hearts, we stand on their shoulders, we stand on their faith, realizing that they were used by God to bring the Catholic faith to us and to this area.” A reception followed in the cafeteria.
