The 2019 Catholic Schools Week Arts & Music Festival at Lakeside featured live performances and student art displays from dozens of elementary and high schools. St. Dominic saluted New Orleans’ Tricentennial in its display, with subjects including St. Louis Cathedral, bead trees, sno-balls, shotgun houses and streetcars.
After learning about pointillism, St. Edward the Confessor seventh graders Kasey Sabido and McKenzie Jones created “Rosie the Riveter” and a Playbill cover, respectively.
Animals always make a popular subject for artists. In the grouping below, St. Angela Merici fourth grader Kate Gaudet’s fish “swims” toward Ursuline fifth grader Lola Echavarria-Santalla’s leopard.
Don’t throw that “junk” away! Schools that incorporated everyday items into works of art included (below): Our Lady of Prompt Succor, Chalmette (whose students marbleized old CDs); St. Edward the Confessor (portrait-making with strips of construction paper, this one by seventh grader Brooke Barbara);
St. Ann (sculptures made of crayons); and St. Stephen (crosses assembled from brightly painted clothespins).
Art teachers often will use the styles and subjects of famous artists to build the skills of their students.
