A dozen of the top senior football players from various schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans have signed and faxed their letters of intent to universities throughout the U.S.
Nine decided there is no place like home and chose athletic careers at colleges within Louisiana.
But three of the state’s best are going to roam.
Archbishop Rummel quarterback Damian Williams (6-1, 225), who led the Raiders to their first Class 5A state championship in December, selected Mississippi State over the University of Southern Mississippi, in which he showed an initial interest.
Rummel tight end Cethan Carter (6-2, 235) chose to display his ability in the Big 10 Conference wearing the colors of Nebraska.
And Brother Martin’s All-State offensive tackle Ryan Hoefield (6-3, 270) decided on Florida State of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Jesuit quarterback Tanner Lee had commited to Tulane before the 2012 season had begun, and he remained true to the university even after the Green Wave sucessfully recruited Nick Montana, the son of legendary San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana.
Tulane also received the signature of St. Charles Catholic’s best defensive player, Luke Jackson, a 6-2, 210 end who projects as an outside linebacker.
Louisiana State signed Holy Cross’ 1,000-yard wide receiver Kevin Spears.
Among the other athletes signing their letters on Feb. 6 were the St. Paul’s duo of linebacker Ed Duplessis (6-2, 215) and defensive back Jay Washington (6-2, 190), who will join Archbichop Shaw wide-out Kent Shelby (6-3, 185) at McNeese State; St. Augustine offensive lineman Damien Daniels (6-4, 290), who chose Southern University, and St. Charles Catholic’s defensive tackle Taylor Corcoran (6-2, 320), who will make the short trip to Southeastern Louisiana University.
Holy Cross’ Ki-Jana Curtis (6-0, 170), a defensive back, also signed with Southern University.
