Our Lady of Prompt Succor School in Chalmette paid special tribute Jan. 16 to two stalwart School Sisters of Notre Dame who taught and ministered at the school for decades. At left, Sister Dorothy (Dot) Maniscalco operates the megaphone for which she became famous during 35 years at OLPS, where she served as administrative assistant and director of the reading learning center.
At right, Sister Mary Lester deBlanc, who first taught English at the school in 1961, receives tokens of appreciation from current students. Sister Lester served as principal from 1967-70, and in 1984, she returned as a teacher. When she “retired” from teaching in 2000, she worked at Archbishop Hannan High School in publicity, and later she volunteered at the Council on Aging. Father Paul Moore established OLPS School in 1952. It was the first Catholic parochial school in St. Bernard Parish.
