CANCER SUPPORT MINISTRY, Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church,  inaugural meeting, June 20, Piovan Hall, 1900 Greenwood Drive, LaPlace. Gatherings will offer spiritual support through prayer, open discussion about one’s own personal experiences and challenges, community resources available and ways to support one another. Speakers may be invited

BOBBY SCHINDLER, brother of the late Terri Schiavo, presents, “Why Terri’s Life Still Matters,” June 20, 6:30 p.m., St. Peter Catholic Church, Covington June 20. Schindler’s life took a dramatic turn in February 1990 when his sister, Terri, collapsed and was left with a profound brain injury. Her estranged husband sought court permission to starve and dehydrate her to death. Schindler will discuss why Terri’s legacy still matters today. Parental discretion is advised for younger teens and children due to subject matter. ARCHDIOCESAN COUNCIL OF THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL, annual fundraising gala, “Jazzin’ on the River: A Celebration of Family,” June 30, aboard the Steamboat Natchez, from 6:30-9 p.m. Dinner, drinks, dancing, family entertainment. GARRET ORGERON JR. was presented the St. Rosalie Men’s Club Service Award May 20 for his service to his school, church, parish and community. He is a graduate of St. Rosalie School and will advance to a Catholic high school, Jesuit, in the fall.
