Theme: “Pro-Woman, Pro-man, Pro-Child.” The week focuses attention on Natural Family Planning methods and church teachings which support their use in marriage. The dates highlight the anniversary of the papal encyclical “Humanae Vitae” (July 25), which articulates Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood, and mark the feasts of Sts. KNIGHTS OF PETER CLAVER ALLIANCE OF CATHOLIC KNIGHTS, F. DeKarlos Blackmon, Supreme Knight and chief executive officer of the Knights of Peter Claver, was elected Deputy President of the International Alliance of Catholic Knights (IACK). Blackmon will work to deepen the faith of Alliance members and all Catholics encouraging active and generous participation in the life and mission of the church. The Knights of Peter Claver is the nation’s only historically black Catholic fraternal organization and join the Knights of Columbus in the Alliance.
ST. BENILDE, the Home and School Association recognized Cecilia Wilson for faculty and staff, and seventh grader Michael Connick with its Leadership Torch Award.

HOLY SEPULCHRE of JERUSALEM, Dr. Raymond Garrity of Metairie was appointed lieutenant of the southeastern lieutenancy of the Holy Sepulchre Order. The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem is a papal order of chivalry founded in the 11th century to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to shrines in the Holy Land. Today, the order sponsors schools, hospitals, convents, orphanages and other institutions in the Holy Land (Israel, the West Bank and Jordan) and helps maintain sacred shrines in Israel and Palestine.
LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, School of Mass Communication’s Public Relations Student Society of America 2013 Bateman team led by public relations students Dwayne Fontenette, Haley Humiston, Charlie LaRock, Leah Whitlock and Vannia Zelaya won first place for their anti-bullying campaign. Coached by Dr. Cathy Rogers, the Bateman team has won the top spot eight times. Also, School of Mass Communication journalism student Shannon Donaldson’s story “College students are reaping the benefits of a booming Hollywood South film industry” won national recognition (top three) May 1 in the Society of Professional Journalists’ National Mark of Excellence Awards.
XAVIER UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA (XULA) added three new members to its board of trustees: strategic marketing and business operations leader Mark D. Goodman, former university president Dr. Marie V. McDemmond, and civil rights leader Marc H. Morial.
Goodman,chairman and CEO of Boyer’s Coffee Company in Denver, has been a top executive in leading public and private companies including Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club and McDonald’s Corporation.
McDemmond, a 1968 Xavier alumna, is president emeritus of Norfolk State University, where she was president from 1997-2006. She was vice president for finance at Florida Atlantic University and held administrative and financial positions at other universities.
Morial, CEO of the National Urban League, has been an entrepreneur, lawyer, state legislator and two-term New Orleans mayor. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Xavier.
ARCHBISHOP CHAPELLE, Kathyrn Claverie, a 1996 graduate, received Chapelle’s 2012-13 Distinguished Educator Award for exemplifying the values of the Catholic Church while setting a standard of excellence among colleagues and serving as a role model for students. She moderates the Showstoppers and Impressions, is chairperson of the Gifted and Talented Committee and prepares students for competitions. She is a member of the New Orleans Opera Chorus and is a cantor, wedding singer and assistant director of the adult choir at St. Louis Cathedral.
