ARCHBISHOP CHAPELLE HIGH SCHOOL, named an Apple Distinguished School for the 2012-13 school year for its implementation of iPad into its 1:1 technology program. The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for schools that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate a vision of exemplary learning environments. It is only one of 87 schools nationwide and the only Catholic school in Louisiana to receive this honor. “At Archbishop Chapelle, we have worked to blend technology into the curriculum in an effort to prepare the young women in our care to compete in the ever-changing global economy,” President Jane Anne Frosch said.
MICHAEL FARRUGIA, a seventh-grade student from Christian Brothers School, won first place in the school spelling bee, outlasting 59 other challengers for the honor. He advanced to the Greater New Orleans Spelling Bee at Xavier University. Patrick Young was the school’s runner-up.
LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, William P. Quigley, J.D. ’77, professor and director of the Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic and Center for Social Justice at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, was honored for his work in several voting rights cases statewide. Quigley received the Emmitt J. Douglas Memorial Award from the Louisiana State Conference of the NAACP at Southern University Law School in Baton Rouge. This is the highest internal honor given to NAACP members within Louisiana. Quigley was part of several legal teams that have helped in voting rights challenges stemming from the reapportioning of voting boundaries in the state.
SISTER OF MOUNT CARMEL Mary Ellen Wheelahan has been selected as Cabrini High School’s 2013 Alumna of the Year. She is a 1972 Cabrini graduate who exemplifies the qualities of service, leadership and excellence – foundational values taught at Cabrini. Sister Mary Ellen has dedicated herself to the care and protection of children. She earned an elementary education degree at UNO in 1976, taking perpetual vows in 1984 with the Congregation of the Sisters of Mount Carmel. She earned a master’s degree in adult education and Christian Community Development from Regis University. She was religious coordinator at Mt. Carmel in New Iberia; founder/administrator of Cub Corner Preschool at Mt. Carmel in New Orleans; and associate director elementary school catechesis. She was the first director of the archdiocesan Safe Environment Office to protect children from child abuse. The office provides resources for church parishes, schools and support organizations related to prevention of child abuse. She developed a program that teaches young people to recognize their value as individuals created in God’s image. She also created the archdiocesan “Calling All Fifth Graders” program to spark the call to religious vocations in young students.
