MONK RUN, due to severe weather threats, the annual one-mile/5K run and walk at St. Joseph Abbey was postponed to April 28. 75376 River Road in Covington. All entry fees are non-refundable. Proceeds support the maintenance and preservation of Abbey forest. The 1-mile race begins at 8 a.m., while the 5K race starts at 8:30 a.m. Registration and number pickup begin at 6:45 a.m. A post-race picnic includes jambalaya, burgers, hot dogs, beverages provided by race sponsor Abita Brewing Company. Bring a chair, blanket for post-race celebration. Hand-made awards from Abbey monks given in several categories. Race day registration is $35, $20 for ages 16 and under, $30 for seniors 65 and over. UNIVERSITY OF HOLY CROSS, Kyle M. France, UHC’s board chair and president of Kehoe-France Inc., and The Libby-Dufour Fund received March 22 the university’s highest honor – the Spes Unica (One Hope) award given annually since 1982. It is the university’s motto and refers to the fact that the cross is humanity’s one hope and the unity found in the Holy Cross family. France is involved with many community organizations including the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District (LSED), Children’s Hospital, University Medical Center in New Orleans, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and The New Orleans Advocate Community Advisory Board. The Libby-Dufour Fund, a charitable foundation supporting education in New Orleans since 1952, was a charter inductee into “The Norman Family Society,” which salutes lifetime giving of $500,000 to $1 million to the University of Holy Cross.
ARCHBISHOP RUMMEL, Jay Roth, head football coach at Archbishop Rummel High School, has been named athletic director for the 2018-19 school year. The announcement was made recently by Marc Milano, president/principal. As athletic director, Roth will continue to coach the Raider football team. A 1981 alumnus of Archbishop Rummel, Roth has completed 23 years as head coach of the Raider football team, won two state championships and 12 Catholic League championships. Prior to coaching at Rummel, he worked at Jesuit, Archbishop Shaw, East Ascension and East Jefferson. He is a 1985 graduate of Nicholls State University. Roth and his wife Karen have one son, Craig, who will be an eighth grader at Archbishop Rummel this fall.
