Cabrini High School’s swim team took to heart that October is breast cancer awareness month and hosted the annual “Stand Up to Cancer Invitational Swim Meet Oct. 12 at the University of New Orleans’ Aquatic Center.
This is the largest non-championship swim meet held annually for the New Orleans Metro League. This year, 290 swimmers from 20 schools competed.
Approximately $4,443 was raised for cancer awareness at the event through donations, admission tickets, heat sheet sales, raffles and auction items that included a signed Drew Brees framed print, a 24×24 Carreno abstract painting and two club tickets for a New Orleans Pelicans game. Raffle prizes featured tickets to The National WWII Museum, two Sephora custom makeover certificates and numerous gift certificates to stores and restaurants in the New Orleans area. Proceeds will be donated to the Tulane Cancer Center in New Orleans.
“The Cancer Awareness Invitational is a great opportunity for the swimming community to come together to support the Tulane Cancer Center and cancer patients in our city,” Cabrini’s head swim coach Sarah Carr said. “The Cabrini swim team enjoys hosting this meet every year because of its ability to raise funds and have a positive impact on the lives of those battling cancer.”
Swimmers from Academy of Our Lady, Archbishop Chapelle, Archbishop Hannan, Archbishop Rummel, Archbishop Shaw, Ben Franklin, Brother Martin, Cabrini, Crescent City Christian School, St. Mary’s Dominican, Haynes, Holy Cross, Jesuit, Kenner Discovery, McGehee, Country Day, Morris Jeff, Mount Carmel Academy, Slidell High School and Ursuline Academy participated.
“The Invitational brings schools from across the New Orleans metro area to come together, compete and have fun swimming, all for a worthy cause,” she said.
