Two reigning state volleyball champions may be off to unusually slow starts, but there are other aspiring Catholic school teams ready to make their moves.
Division I champion Mount Carmel lost at home to Country Day on Sept. 5, following a sweep of Northshore two days earlier, and Division IV titleist Archbishop Hannan is 1-4 in its first weeks of the season following losses at Cabrini, Fontainebleau and two setbacks in the Academy of the Sacred Heart tournament.
Four others have had successful early campaigns.
Cabrini has made an impression with victories over Dominican and Hannan. But the Crescents will be tested by Mount Carmel and St. Joseph’s Academy in their next scheduled matches.
Archbishop Chapelle, the Division I runner-up, has won three of its first four matches, including impressive wins over Hannan at Sacred Heart.
The Academy of Our Lady is 3-0, with key victories over Newman and Ursuline Academy. The Penguins’ next test will come on Sept. 25 when they visit Country Day.
Pope John Paul II is unbeaten in its first two matches and has a stern test when the Lady Jaguars host Mount Carmel on Sept. 25.
St. Charles Catholic has won its first three matches over St. Katharine Drexel Prep, East St. John and Ascension Christian.
Ursuline and Sacred Heart have won three of four matches.
