It was payback week for Brother Martin’s basketball team, and the 49th Newman Invitational Tournament was the Crusaders’ venue for revenge.
The Crusaders handed both Newman, which had beaten them in the CYO Tournament’s championship game a week earlier, and East Jefferson their first setbacks of the season during the five-night tournament.
After defeating Cohen and Country Day in early rounds, the Crusaders ended Newman’s unbeaten streak at nine games, 63-59, in the semifinals. They then used a pressure defense to outscore East Jefferson 51-40 and take home the school’s eighth Newman title. In doing so, Brother Martin, now 11-1, ended the Warriors’ unbeaten streak at 11.
