The Catholic Cultural Heritage Center of the Archdiocese of New Orleans is sponsoring an art contest for high school students on the theme “Catholic New Orleans.”
In addition to students earning cash awards, winning entries will be displayed in an exhibit June 13-Sept. 1 at the Old Ursuline Convent, 1100 Chartres St. New Orleans.
Entries will be accepted by May 1 from any high school student living within the boundaries of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The student does not have to attend a Catholic high school. A student may submit only one entry.
The artwork must be the original work of the student, and the maximum size is 24-by-36 inches. Artwork will be accepted in oil/acrylic paint, watercolor, pastels, pen and ink, and charcoal. If chosen for display, artwork must be framed, unless it is canvas that has been finished on all sides.
Entries will be judged in four class categories: freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. Cash awards will be made for first place ($150), second ($100) and third ($50) in each of the four categories. One entry will be selected as “best in show” and awarded an additional $100. Judges also may select honorable mentions from each category to be displayed in the exhibition.
Entries will be judged on interpretation of the theme, creativity, design and technique. Entries must be submitted by May 1. A photograph of the artwork (in jpeg format) should be emailed to [email protected], along with a completed application form (available at www.arch-no.org).
Winners will be notified by May 23. Artwork chosen for exhibition must be delivered by June 2 at 3 p.m. to the Ursuline Convent.
