When John Curtis High meets District 9-2A rival Clark on Oct. 28, its head coach J.T. Curtis will become the second prep football coach in the U.S. to achieve 500 victories.
In his 43rd year at the helm of his father’s school, Curtis has amassed a record of 499-54-6. Clark is 0-7 and has scored just 44 points to its opponents’ 294.
Curtis is among 44 Louisiana coaches to win 200 or more games.
The only active coaches in the New Orleans area among the “200-win” elite are former Archbishop Shaw and West Jefferson coach Hank Tierney, who has logged a 4-3 record in his first year at Ponchatoula, and Lutcher’s Tim Detillier. Tierney’s career record is 225-78. Lutcher’s 6-1 mark places Detillier’s record at 225-98.
Approaching the 200-win plateau is Mickey Roussel of Riverside Academy with a career mark of 196-80. Roussel is followed by Belle Chasse’s Bob Becnel, 168-105; Archbishop Rummel’s Jay Roth, 156-42, and John Ehret’s Billy North, 154-97.
