Neighboring Academy of Our Lady and Archbishop Shaw high schools – located within shouting distance in Marrero – have a great tradition of celebrating the feast of St. John Bosco together every year at the end of January.
Both schools are Salesian high schools and follow St. John Bosco’s educational philosophy of reason, religion and loving kindness.
On Jan. 30, students and members of the Salesian family gathered on Academy of Our Lady’s campus for Mass, celebrated by Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond.
Following Mass, students participated in an annual friendly competition called the “Battle of the Birds.” The competition consists of field day activities – many of them bordering on the ridiculous and the sublime – and a rally by both schools.
Faculty members – including Academy of Our Lady’s principal, Salesian Sister Michelle Geiger, and Archbishop Shaw’s principal and director, Salesian Father Louis Molinelli – participated in the fun.
When all the votes were tallied, Archbishop Shaw won the coveted “Battle of the Birds” trophy this year.
