ARCHBISHOP RUMMEL HIGH SCHOOL, 1901 Severn Ave., Metairie – Celebrating its 51st year of Raider Pride, Archbishop Rummel High School continues to prosper. Principal Michael Scalco (’67) leads a staff of 59 lay faculty members and a school chaplain.
Opened in 1962 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Archbishop Rummel High School continues to serve the students of the New Orleans metropolitan area and has an alumni population of more than 12,000 members. The Christian Brothers conducted Archbishop Rummel through June 1993, when they relinquished governance to the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
In the 2009-10 school year, Archbishop Rummel High School announced its re-association with the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Today, Archbishop Rummel High School is proud to have Christian Brother Gale Condit serving as the school president and Christian Brother Michael Livaudais (’66) serving as a teacher. Archbishop Rummel is proud to live the charisms of faith, community and service as a part of the Lasallian family throughout the world.
To support this diverse student population, the school offers courses in several learning levels: Advanced Placement, honors, academic and core. Living the mission of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Archbishop Rummel is proud to offer a resource program for all students who qualify. The school’s commitment to excellence is evidenced by increasing the number of TOPS-qualifying courses students must take to graduate, strengthening the service program for all students and requiring an ACT prep class for each student as part of the regular school curriculum.
As an indication of the school’s strong commitment to academic excellence, Archbishop Rummel High School offers an impressive academic scholarship program for eighth- and ninth-grade students. The intention is to attract the very best elementary school students in the metropolitan area and to challenge them with a rigorous college preparatory curriculum.
Proving the school’s commitment to the ever-changing technology world, each student upon attendance receives the new Apple iPad. The iPad program allows students to have access to a work station both at home and during school. This program promotes the use of technology for research, note-taking, test-taking and presentations by the teacher and the student. Extracurricular activities abound at Archbishop Rummel High School and are provided to appeal to the interests and needs of the student body. Organizations and clubs include participation in academic activities, athletic events, fine arts, literary work and Lasallian service projects. With all students eating lunch during the same period each day, students can take advantage of extra time for club meetings, tutorial sessions and one-on-one meetings with teachers.
Archbishop Rummel has also expanded its student service program. In 2012, students in all grade levels volunteered more than 19,400 hours at 50 different service partners across the metropolitan area. Living the school’s mission statement of social awareness and service, students select projects that benefit others in need and give fulfillment to the student. Academically, Archbishop Rummel High School students excel. Recently released data from the State Department of Education shows that 91 percent of ARHS college freshmen are in good standing, a statistic that bodes well when compared to that of other area schools. In addition, 86 percent of the class of 2012 earned the qualifying score for TOPS on the ACT, and 72.2 percent of the AP students earned college credit.
Archbishop Rummel’s open house is scheduled for Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Raider Gym.
