Fans brought canned goods to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Sept. 9 before the Saints season opener against Washington to supplement the food stocks at Second Harvest Food Bank. They also made monetary donations.
The 2012 Harvest the Music concert series, benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, will kick off Sept. 19 with the Iguanas and Los Poy-Boy-Citos from 5 to 7:30 p.m., in Lafayette Square, between St. Charles Avenue and Camp Street, across from Gallier Hall.
The fifth annual series features regional and national musicians every Wednesday through Oct. 24. Vendors such as Martin’s Wine Cellar, Squeal, Ye Olde Kettle Cooker, Miss Linda’s Soul Food Catering, Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s Bar and Restaurant, Crepes a la Cart, Oceana, Cafe Adelaide and Second Harvest Food Bank Community Kitchen will sell food and drinks to benefit Second Harvest’s food operation.
An artists’ village also will feature artwork and crafts for purchase from regional artists and designers.
Upcoming artists include: Sept. 26, Dr. John and the Lower 911, featuring Jon Cleary plus Natalie Mae and Johnny Sansone; Oct. 3, Anders Osborne, Bonerama Horns, Dave Malone plus Mia Borders; Oct. 10, JJ Grey and Mofro plus Collin Lake;
Oct. 17, North Mississippi All Stars, Alvin Youngblood Hart and Lightning Malcolm plus Young Pinstripe Brass Band; and Oct. 24, Rebirth Brass Band plus MS Rail Company.
Second Harvest Food Bank fights hunger through food distribution, advocacy, education and disaster response across 23 south Louisiana parishes. To put “hunger” in the spotlight, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome will light up orange during the Sept. 19 concert, and concert-goers are encouraged to wear orange in solidarity to show that hunger is an everyday problem.
