Father James Wehner, right, rector-president of Notre Dame Seminary, reflected in his homily at a morning Mass April 20 on Pope Francis’ admonition regarding the church’s responsibility to engage the world. Quoting the Holy Father, Father Wehner said: “A church that does not go out, sooner or later, gets sick in the vitiated atmosphere of enclosure.” While acknowledging the risks of engaging the culture, the pope said, “I prefer a thousand times an injured church rather than a sick church.” Hundreds of people visited the chapel throughout the day to pray before the Blessed Sacrament for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
