Academy of Our Lady faculty member Joseph Bordlee is the winner of Barnes and Noble’s My Favorite Teacher Contest. Senior Calli Nguyen, of Harvey, nominated Bordlee by submitting an essay detailing how influential Bordlee has been throughout her high school education. Nguyen’s essay was selected as the winner among other entries submitted by students from local schools throughout the West Bank. An educator of 28 years, Bordlee currently teaches English 8, English IV Dual Enrollment, English V and Yearbook at Academy of Our Lady. Faculty and family members of Bordlee and Nguyen gathered for a reception in celebration on April 21 at Barnes and Noble in Harvey. “His classes mostly consisted of utilizing the ability to critically think have greatly challenged us as students to dive further into analyzing and interpreting literary information,” said Nguyen in her essay. “The particular set of skills that Mr. Joseph Bordlee helped me attain have been so beneficial that I was able increase my ACT English sub score from a 25 to 33. His remarkable teaching has reassured me that I can, as he would say, “Rock on!” and reach my full potential.”
“I grew up attending Saint John Bosco Church with Mr. Joseph Bordlee, who regularly serves Sunday masses alongside me as a Eucharistic Minister,” she added. “In addition, it has been an immense pleasure to view and have him in my life as my wise English teacher and inspiring role-model in Catholicism. To others, he may be a tranquil stranger strolling along. However, at Academy of Our Lady, Mr. Joseph Bordlee – the man who wears a sweater vest everyday – is the most kind-hearted, sympathetic, and humorous educator. “
