“No more war. War never again,” was Archbishop Gregory Aymond’s plea to the several hundred gathered Sept. 7 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor on State Street to pray for peace in Syria.
The Mass he concelebrated with Father Terry Hayden was in direct response to Pope Francis’ call earlier that week for Catholics and all people of good will worldwide to observe a five-hour vigil of prayer and fasting Sept. 7 for an end to the unrest in Syria and peace worldwide.
“At this very moment that we are gathered at Our Lady of Prompt Succor shrine (in New Orleans), the Vatican walls of St. Peter Square are being filled with thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people because the Holy Father said that he would hold – beginning at 7 p.m. Rome time until midnight – a vigil of prayer,” Archbishop Aymond said.
