Equipping every church in New Orleans with a surveillance camera is one of the goals of the NOLA Partnership for Public Safety and Peace, a new collaboration that will bring together members of the city’s faith, business, education and governmental communities in the fight against crime.
In addition to the crime-fighting cameras, the partnership will focus on crime prevention by strengthening mentoring programs for children, teens and young adults, guided by successful local models such as Catholic Charities’ Isaiah 43 Parenting and Mentoring Program and The Crescent City Keepers.
The partnership will hold its free kickoff event, a panel discussion entitled “How the Faith and Business Communities Can Save New Orleans,” on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. at UNO’s University Center Ballroom 203.
Invited panelists include Archbishop Gregory Aymond; Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League and former mayor of New Orleans; Ken Polite, former U.S. attorney and a parishioner of St. Peter Claver Church in New Orleans; and John Casbon, founder of the New Orleans Police Foundation.
