In a visit to St. Mary’s Dominican High School, Cabra Dominican Sister Maeve McMahon, an educator and author of “A Dream of Fire: A Story about Dominic Guzman,” shared with the eighth-grade class her inspiration for the book.
In “A Dream of Fire,” Sister Maeve tells the story about Dominic, whose mother dreamed before his birth that he would set the world on fire with zeal for God’s truth – “veritas.” The book for young readers was launched in December 2015, when the Dominican order began its 800th anniversary year.
A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Sister Maeve began teaching in her hometown and continued in New Orleans, where she was a teacher and principal for 37 years.
Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 forced her to evacuate, leaving behind a newly opened pilot school and returning to Ireland. The experience inspired her to write “Riding Out the Hurricane.” That book won the 2011 Silver Nautilus Award in the middle grade/teen category.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu called Sister Maeve’s book “a beautiful and compelling novel about faith, hope and love … when Hurricane Katrina’s carnage was matched by heroism and human compassion.”
“We all love stories, and we are part of this huge story,” she told the students. “This year we celebrate the 800th year of the founding of the Order of Preachers. Our rich heritage connects us to students at Dominican schools throughout the world.”
