The Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart celebrated a milestone on Nov. 18 – the 200th anniversary of the arrival in the New World of the community of nuns who would go on to establish the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans and more than 40 schools throughout the world.
St. Rose Philippine Duchesne and four companion sisters sailed from France to New Orleans in 1818. At far left, Amelia Stein represents St. Rose Philippine and Elise Khoury represents St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, foundress. Current-day sisters, below, were acknowledged at the Mass by Archbishop Gregory Aymond.
