Approximately 1,200 youth attended World Youth Day in New Orleans Nov. 3 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Students represented 45 parishes and schools. The theme, taken from Pope Francis’ World Youth Day 2019 theme for the universal church (Luke 1:38 – “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word,”), was “Fiat,” which is Latin for “Let it be done.”

Lay evangelist Michael Gormley director of evangelization for St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Houston, was the keynote speaker. He challenged the teens to truly step out in faith and trust in the Lord and to imitate Our Lady’s “yes” to him. Archbishop Gregory Aymond encouraged the teens to open themselves up to the various ways in which God is calling them to simply take a small step closer to him. The day was concluded with Mass celebrated by the archbishop.
