St. Mary’s Dominican students excel at engineering, robotics

Two robotics teams from St. Mary’s Dominican High School captured wins at the Louisiana FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC®) Regional Championship at Destrehan High School. The event drew 20 schools statewide. This was Dominican’s fourth time to qualify for regionals.

The Dominican “Valkyries” Team won a third place Inspire Award, the highest  given at the competition, first for the Motivate Award and second for the Connect Award. The “Ultra Violet” Team won first for the Think Award and second in design.

Dominican’s Engineering Team received the “Rookie Team Award” for its performance and placed fourth out of 24, beating several college teams in the Louisiana Collegiate Design Competition (LCDC) at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Kenny Lannes is coach and moderator.

Dominican was one of three high schools that competed. The competition was hosted by the Society of Peer Mentors from the LSU College of Engineering. LCDC is a student-driven, student organized engineering competition focused on developing skills in leadership, teamwork, networking and applying engineering knowledge.
