Artwork honors St. LaSalle, patron of teachers

By Beth Donze, Clarion Herald

A specially commissioned artwork was recently displayed at four local schools (Archbishop Rummel, De La Salle, Christian Brothers and St. Paul in Covington) to mark the  300th anniversary of the death of St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle Christian Brothers) and the patron saint of teachers. St. La Salle founded the religious order of teaching brothers in 1680 in Reims, France. At the top of the painting, St. Paul (left) and St. Peter flank Our Lady of the Star and the Child Jesus. Among the depicted saints and religious are St. La Salle himself (middle row, second from left). The cross holds relics of four saints. The order is also celebrating the 100th year of continued presence of the Brothers in Louisiana. The artwork is being permanently housed at St. Paul School.
