Cabrini High science teacher Ann Smart was awarded the Louisiana Science Teachers Association (LSTA) “Outstanding Secondary Science Teacher of the Year Award” Dec. 1 at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) New Orleans-area Conference. The award honors a science teacher at each level (elementary, middle and secondary) who has demonstrated exemplary teaching.
A science teacher for nearly 40 years at Cabrini, Smart was nominated by a colleague who is involved in science education at the state level. She received a plaque, $400 cash prize to be used in her classroom or to defray expenses to a regional or national science teachers’ convention and recognition in the LSTA LASER Newsletter. She was also honored at the awards ceremony of the conference. “It is quite an honor to be selected,” said Smart upon the honor. “I feel like it is confirmation that I am doing what I am supposed to be doing. I think Mother Cabrini would be proud. Throughout the conference, I felt her presence with me and that I was continuing her legacy and mission.”
