The 2017 Clarion Herald Elite Volleyball Team

By Ron Brocato, Clarion Herald

Like being the marshal of Dodge City, selecting the 10 best volleyball players among the outstanding schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans is a chancy job, as Gunsmoke’s” Matt Dillon used to say. “It makes a man watchful … and a little lonely.”

There are so many candidates and few skills and abilities that separate them. Being watchful is a keyword.

Talking to coaches whose teams played against the candidates is important as well.

With that in mind and the selections made, the Clarion Herald presents the Elite Class of 2017.

Led by the Player of the Year, Ellie Holzman of Mount Carmel Academy, the team includes four players who earned Elite recognition in 2016.

The other three are seniors Camille Dedeaux of Pope John Paul II and Ursuline‘s Macie Grubbs and Jessica Addvensky.

Like Holzman, the team includes three other hard-hitting sophomores – Pope John Paul II’s Ansley Tullis, Cabrini’s Kai Williams and Holzman’s Mount Carmel teammate, Sofia Conaway.

Seniors Kellie Garraway of St. Scholastica and Tyler Caliste of De La Salle, and junior Allee Morris of Archbishop Hannan complete the team.

Two veteran mentors share Coach of the Year honors.

Under April Hagadone’s tutelage, Mount Carmel won its fourth straight Division I titleon Nov. 11.

Danny Tullis claimed his first Division IV championship as Pope John Paul II’s head coach.
