School Sister of Notre Dame Richard Marie Burke, a native of New Orleans who spent most of her religious life in Catholic education, died Nov. 5 at Southwest Regional Medical Center in McComb, Mississippi. She was 93 and had spent 73 years in religious life.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 8 at St. Teresa Church in Chatawa. Father Suresh Thirumalareddy, pastor, was the principal celebrant.
She attended elementary and secondary school in Redemptorist Parish (St. Alphonsus) and attended Notre Dame College in St. Louis. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame and received the name Richard Marie. After pronouncing her vows in 1944, she began her teaching profession.
For more than 60 years, Sister Richard Marie educated youth in the classroom and led other educators through her administrative services in Illinois, Missouri and Louisiana.
She was a teacher and administrator at St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa and principal of Resurrection Middle and High School in Pascagoula, Mississippi. During her last 10 years of classroom education, she taught adult education in New Iberia, Louisiana.
She moved to St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa in 2008.
