Though players come and go, the cream of the volleyball crop continues to perpetuate winning programs year after year.
And the best teams in the field of the Sept. 16-17 Catholic League Volleyball Tournament did just that.
Three-time reigning Division IV champion Pope John Paul II and Division II titlist Teurlings Catholic swept their five tournament matches without losing a single game.
And joining them at the top of the standings was Dominican, who won its five matches.
The tournament co-host with Ursuline Academy, Dominican improved its record to 12-5 for the young season and awaits a District 8-I match at home against the Division I champion Mount Carmel (10-1) on Oct. 4.
Pope John Paul II improved its record to 14-1 with key victories over St. Joseph’s Academy, Notre Dame and 2016 Division II champion St. Thomas More.
After opening the season with nine consecutive victories, Ursuline dropped matches to Teurlings and Notre Dame but added three wins.
Cabrini won four of five matches. Its only loss was to undefeated Teurlings.
St. Scholastica, 4-1 for the tournament and 12-3 on the season, was another Teurlings victim in two games.
