Deacon Jones, educator who served Our Lady of Guadalupe


Deacon Melvin C. Jones Sr., who served as a permanent deacon for many years at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (St. Jude Shrine), died April 19. He was 82 and had served as a permanent deacon since 1980.

The New Orleans native served in the U.S. Air Force, and he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Xavier University of Louisiana. He taught elementary school in the Orleans Parish school system for 20 years.

Deacon Jones is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helena Rohman Jones, and children, Melvin C. Jones Jr. (Clara), Sykina Gaston, Selina Vik (Rob) of Orlando, Fla.; Paula Thomas (Wilbert) of Douglasville, Ga.; Zaida Monconduit; Michelle Banks (Dr. Michael) of Las Vegas, Nev.; Miguel Jones (Lisa) and Christopher Lee of Houston.

He is also survived by 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and sisters Jacqueline McCrea and Judy Jones of New Orleans; brothers Walter Jones (Lola) and Noel Jones (Deidre) of New Orleans; and William Jones of Passaic, N.J., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his service at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Deacon Jones also served as a deacon at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church and at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in New Orleans.

A funeral Mass was celebrated May 1 at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church in New Orleans.

Interment followed at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3. Donations be made to Bethel Colony South Transformation Ministry at 4114 Old Gentilly Road, New Orleans, LA 70126.
