National Merit honors local high school scholars

    The nonprofit National Merit Scholarship Corporation has released the 2013 scholarships recipients in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarships Program.
    Announced on April 24 as corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship winners were John J. D’Angelo of Harahan, a Jesuit High School graduate, earning the National Merit State Farm Companies Foundation Scholarship; and Cecelia A. Morise of Metairie, a Mount Carmel Academy graduate who earned the National Merit Colgate-Palmolive Company Scholarship.
    Announced on May 8 were these National Merit $2,500 Merit Scholarship winners: Mary Cecilia Stoner of Gretna and Alyssa C. Blanchard of Harahan, both St. Mary’s Dominican High School graduates; Sarah E. Bond, Metairie, a Mount Carmel Academy graduate; and James R. Sampognaro of Metairie, Peyton L. Fine of New Orleans and Brandon J. Butera of Slidell, all Jesuit High graduates.
    On May 29, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced these winners of college- or university-sponsored National Merit Scholarships: Kevin W. Hartline of Metairie, Archbishop Rummel, National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship; Madeline E. Munch of Metairie, St. Mary’s Dominican, National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship; Dara E. Ruhlman of Metairie, Mount Carmel Academy, National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship; Johnston Burkhardt of New Orleans, Jesuit, National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship; Zachary A. Creel of New Orleans, Jesuit, National Merit University of Mississippi Scholarship; Victoria G. Donze of New Orleans, St. Mary’s Dominican, National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship; Lucas C. Lavoie of New Orleans, Jesuit, National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship; Sarah E. Tyson of New Orleans, Ursuline Academy, National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship; Christopher P. Stephens of St. Rose, Jesuit, National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship.
    On July 15, National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced 1,800 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships. Local winners were: Adair E. Boudreaux of Metairie, St. Mary’s Dominican, National Merit Fordham University Scholarship; Seth S. Chauhan of Metairie, Jesuit, National Merit University of Alabama Scholarship; Carl E. Hellmers IV of Metairie, Jesuit, National Merit Vanderbilt University Scholarship; Matthew J. Wolff of Metairie, Jesuit, National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship; Jimmy J. Brown of New Orleans, Jesuit, National Merit Tulane University Scholarship; William L. Emmett,  Jesuit, National Merit Emory University Scholarship; Joseph F. Kepper of New Orleans, Jesuit, a National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship; Brandon K. Manganello of New Orleans, Jesuit, a National Merit Tulane University Scholarship; Matt J. Tillery of New Orleans, Jesuit, a National Merit Fordham University Scholarship; Benjamin T. Guerra of River Ridge, Jesuit, National Merit University of Alabama Scholarship.
    National Merit Scholarship Corporation also announced the names of approximately 800 outstanding Black American high school seniors who have won a $2,500 Achievement Scholarship award awards through the National Achievement Scholarship Program: Samantha J. Adams of New Orleans, an Ursuline Academy graduate; April M. Ahmed of New Orleans, a Mount Carmel Academy graduate; and Gabrielle C. Mendy of New Orleans, an Ursuline Academy graduate.
