Marianite nun dies at age 80

obit_marianite_sr_genevieve    Marianite Sister Genevieve Sensat (Sister Mary Alice) died March 18 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing home in Opelousas. She was 80.
    Sister Genevieve was born in Lake Arthur, grew up in Iota and entered the Congregation of the Marianites of Holy Cross in 1952. She pronounced perpetual vows in 1956, the same year as earning a baccalaureate degree from Our Lady of Holy Cross College. She taught at Catholic schools in Franklin, Ville Platte, Lake Charles, Morgan City and New Orleans. After completing advanced studies in French, she was translator and secretary for the Marianite Congregational Administration in Le Mans, France, and Potomac, Md., and was formation director.  From 1996-2004, she ministered in Haiti at College Regina Assumpta serving at the College of the Holy Cross Sisters in Cap Haitien.
    Her last years of ministry were spent at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home.     She was preceded in death by her father Frank P. Sensat, her mother Alice Guidry Sensat, and four brothers: James, Elmer, Grant and Anthony Sensat. She is survived by sister Joyce Sensat Maynor, of Baton Rouge, two sisters-in-law and by nieces and nephews and their families.  
    A wake with Mass was held in the chapel at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home.  She was buried in St. Landry Cemetery in Opelousas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Marianites of Holy Cross at 1011 Gallier St., New Orleans, LA 70117.
